Retail pricing is not random. Every category has a rhythm — predictable windows when prices drop because of inventory cycles, seasonal demand shifts, or competition between retailers. Learning these patterns is one of the most practical things you can do as a consumer.

Electronics: January and November

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) happens every January, which is when manufacturers unveil new products. The previous generation immediately gets marked down. November includes Black Friday, which is genuinely one of the better times to buy electronics — particularly TVs, where competition between retailers produces real discounts of 30–50% on name brands.

Furniture: February and August

Furniture stores receive new inventory in the spring and fall, which means they’re trying to move old stock in late winter (February) and late summer (August). Clearance pricing during these months is often 40–60% off regular retail. Shopping at the end of a month also helps, as salespeople are more motivated to hit monthly targets.

Clothing: End of Season

Retailers start receiving next-season inventory well before the current season ends. This means fall clothing goes on clearance starting in August, winter clothing in December/January, spring in May, and summer in July. Shopping end-of-season for items that aren’t trend-dependent (basics, outerwear, athletic wear) is consistently one of the most cost-effective approaches.

Cars: End of Quarter, End of Year

Dealerships work on quotas that reset at the end of each quarter (March, June, September, December). Buying in the last week of a quarter — particularly the last week of December — gives you the most negotiating leverage. Year-end inventory clearance on current-model-year vehicles is also when the best deals on new cars appear.

Appliances: Holiday Weekends

Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Presidents Day consistently feature appliance sales at major retailers. These aren’t manufactured events — they reflect genuine competition between retailers trying to drive foot traffic. Black Friday also produces significant appliance deals, though selection may be more limited.
